Ice Sheets Lost 11,309 Billion Tonnes Since 1979

Greenland and Antarctica have lost a combined 11,309 billion tonnes of ice since 1979, raising global sea levels by 31.4 millimetres. The majority of this loss, around 84%, was due to accelerated glacier discharge into the ocean, not surface melting. Ice losses significantly increased from the 1990s onwards. While a temporary slowdown occurred between 2020 and 2023, scientists caution this is a short-term fluctuation within a longer warming trend.

ग्रीनलैंड और अंटार्कटिका से 1979 के बाद से कुल 11,309 अरब टन बर्फ़ पिघल चुकी है। इससे समुद्र का जलस्तर 31.4 मिलीमीटर बढ़ गया है। ज़्यादातर बर्फ़ पिघलने से नहीं, बल्कि ग्लेशियरों के तेज़ी से समुद्र में जाने से घटी है। 1990 के दशक से बर्फ़ का यह नुकसान काफ़ी बढ़ गया है। 2020-2023 के बीच थोड़ी कमी आई, लेकिन वैज्ञानिक कहते हैं कि यह बस एक छोटा सा उतार-चढ़ाव है।
