Tamil Nadu Ranks Last in Iodised Salt Use Despite Being Major Producer

TOI - Delhi · india

Tamil Nadu, India's second-largest salt producer, has the lowest rate of households using adequately iodised salt, according to a health minister. A 2018-19 survey found only 62% of state households used iodised salt, compared to the national average of 76%. Health officials attribute this to families using unbranded salt, improper storage, and cooking methods that reduce iodine content. Iodine deficiency poses significant risks, including preventable brain damage in children and developmental issues during pregnancy. The state health department is intensifying efforts to ensure adequate iodisation in salt for consumption.
