Florida Sinks 227-Foot Freighter To Create Boo McCulley Artificial Reef

Florida has transformed a derelict 227-foot freighter, the Borocho, into an artificial reef named Boo McCulley. The ship, which had been abandoned in the Miami River for a decade, was deliberately sunk nine miles off Martin County on November 18, 2025. This initiative, funded by the FWC's Derelict Vessel program, was the most cost-effective method for disposing of the vessel. The artificial reef aims to provide a new habitat and extend an existing fishing corridor, named for John "Boo" McCulley, a significant contributor to artificial reef building in Florida.
