Punjab Farm Fires Drop Sharply Amidst Shifting Farmer Attitudes and Market for Stubble

Times of India · environment

Punjab has witnessed a significant decline in stubble burning, with farm fires dropping from over 83,000 in 2020 to around 5,100 in 2025. Early indications suggest this trend is continuing this season. Farmers are increasingly choosing not to burn paddy residue, influenced by government support for machinery and a growing market for crop residue, which can be sold to pellet and briquette units. Despite this progress, access to machinery and the cost of managing stubble remain challenges for many farmers, with burning still being the quickest and cheapest option.
