Switzerland Lost Nearly One-Fifth of Its Glacial Ice in Just Five Years
Al Jazeera · world
Switzerland has lost nearly 20 percent of its glacial ice since 2021, with glaciers receding rapidly due to low winter snow and record-high summer temperatures. Researchers reported that glaciers lost 5.5 percent of their ice volume in the hydrologic year ending September 30, 2026. Scientists attribute the massive ice loss to human-caused climate change, noting that while all glaciers are affected, smaller ones are disappearing quickly. This rapid melting poses a significant threat to the country's iconic Alpine landscape and winter sports industry.
