BRICS Nations Highlight 'Carbon Debt' Amidst Climate Talks and Fossil Fuel Debate
Hindustan Times · environment
Developing nations, including BRICS members, are emphasizing 'carbon debt' at climate conferences, arguing that historically industrialized countries bear greater responsibility for global warming. Experts explain that developed nations emitted significantly more greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution, accumulating wealth while contributing disproportionately to climate change. For instance, the US emitted about 400 gigatons of carbon dioxide between 1890 and 2009, compared to India's 53 gigatons. This concept of climate justice questions why nations that contributed least to the problem suffer the most from its effects, such as extreme weather events.
