Keralam's Mangrove Cover Increased Over Past Decade, Finds CMFRI Study
The Hindu · india
A recent study by ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has revealed an overall increase in Keralam's mangrove cover during the past decade. This finding comes despite the state having lost nearly 90% of its mangroves over the preceding five decades. The study utilized satellite images from 2017 and 2026 to map changes in mangrove vegetation across coastal districts. Mangroves are crucial for fish breeding grounds, coastal protection against storms, and carbon absorption, highlighting the importance of satellite monitoring for conservation efforts.
