Companion Dogs Successfully Sniff Out Invasive Spotted Lanternfly Eggs
Hindustan Times · environment
Researchers have found that companion dogs can be trained to detect the egg masses of the invasive spotted lanternfly, a pest that threatens crops. A study published in PeerJ involved 182 dog-handler teams from across the United States who trained their dogs using frozen egg samples. The dogs underwent tests, including a box test and a field test, to assess their detection abilities. Results indicated that companion dogs could successfully identify the egg masses under both controlled and field conditions, potentially expanding efforts to control the pest's spread.
