Spain's Donkey Firefighters Graze Wildfire Fuel Near Doñana

Hindustan Times · environment

In southern Spain, 18 rescued donkeys are employed to reduce wildfire fuel near Doñana National Park. Operated by the association El Burrito Feliz, these donkeys graze for up to seven hours daily from March to November, clearing vegetation in designated strips. This method creates firebreaks by consuming dry grass and scrub, interrupting potential fire paths. While not a complete replacement for mechanical clearing, targeted grazing is recognized as a cost-effective method for wildfire prevention, potentially saving significant expenses compared to traditional methods.
