El Nino Impact: Telangana Farmers Shift To Horticulture Crops
The Hindu · india
The El Nino phenomenon has prompted a significant shift in crop choices among Telangana farmers, moving away from traditional paddy cultivation. Horticulture crops, including vegetables, fruits, and spices, have seen a substantial increase in cultivation area, expanding by 12.81 lakh acres. This transition occurred despite a 17% deficit in Southwest Monsoon rainfall. The state government is actively encouraging this shift, providing seeds at subsidized rates and raising awareness about alternative, less water-intensive crops to manage depleting groundwater and reservoir levels.
