Manitoba Woman Opens First On-Reserve Animal Shelter

June Thomas has opened Manitoba's first on-reserve animal shelter on Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation, continuing her work rescuing stray dogs since 2017. Driven by the loss of her own dog to parvovirus, she surveyed 200 homes and helped sterilise over 65 animals. The shelter, run by Ginew Animal Care Services, aims to provide a sustainable, community-led solution to animal overpopulation and disease, reducing the need for off-reserve veterinary care.
