Delhi's Air Quality Plummets to 389 Amidst Farm Fires and Stagnant Winds

Hindustan Times · environment

Delhi's air quality deteriorated significantly overnight, reaching an AQI of 389 by Friday morning. This worsening pollution is attributed to stagnant ground-level winds and smoke carried from farm fires in neighbouring Punjab and Haryana. Satellite data indicates a sharp increase in farm fires, nearly doubling in a week. At least 28 of Delhi's 59 reporting stations registered in the 'severe' category, with PM2.5 being the primary pollutant. The situation is exacerbated by a temperature inversion trapping pollution near the ground.
