Streetlight Out? Your Local Civic Body Is Responsible, Not PM or CM
TV9 Hindi · india
When a streetlight goes out in an Indian city, residents often complain to higher authorities, unaware that the responsibility lies with the local civic body like a Municipal Corporation. The 74th Constitutional Amendment in 1992 granted urban local bodies constitutional status and assigned them 18 functions, including street lighting. However, these bodies struggle financially, generating only about 60-64% of their income locally, relying on grants for the rest. This financial dependence limits their autonomy in prioritizing local development issues.
