British Asbestos Legacy Haunts Indian Town

Kymore, India's first asbestos factory town, faces a toxic legacy from British company Turner & Newall. Decades of dumped asbestos waste, estimated at one million tonnes, continue to contaminate the area. Despite thousands diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases and claims settled by a UK trust totalling approximately Rs 141 crore, the Madhya Pradesh government lacks a consolidated health map. This leaves a significant gap in tracking exposure, disease incidence, and screening for the town's 28,000 residents.
