Dharashiv district in Maharashtra, declared drought-hit across all eight tehsils, is facing a severe water crisis with groundwater levels dropping significantly. The district administration has invoked special powers under the Maharashtra Groundwater Act to protect public drinking water sources from overuse and extraction. New wells are prohibited within 500 metres of notified public sources, and extraction can be regulated or temporarily stopped within a kilometre.
