Google-Backed Project Releases 3 Million Mosquitoes in Australia, Cuts Populations by 95%

Times of India · science

A Google-backed initiative in Australia successfully released approximately three million specially bred male mosquitoes, leading to a significant reduction of up to 95% in disease-carrying Aedes aegypti populations. The project, which began in 2015, utilized the Wolbachia bacterium to create incompatible matings, preventing viable offspring. This method, detailed in findings published in 2021, saw mosquito populations decline within four weeks of the 2018 releases. The success of this environmentally friendly approach is now being considered for similar projects in California and Florida.
