US Urges World Bank to End Oil, Gas Financing Restrictions

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on the World Bank to lift restrictions on financing upstream oil and gas projects. He advocates for a technology-neutral approach to energy investment, urging the bank to assess projects individually rather than exclude entire development categories. Bessent also pressed for increased World Bank support for critical minerals mining, including deep-sea mining, and for accelerating the graduation of wealthier nations from borrowing programs.
