A California couple, Corrine and Doug Thomas, who purchased a property in 2021, faced over $1 million in fines and $200,000 for barn demolition linked to the previous owner's alleged cannabis operation. The county pursued penalties against them based on the property's history, even though they disputed the violations. After five years, a settlement has withdrawn the disputed notices, fines, and fees. The Institute for Justice, representing the couple, stated the agreement also mandates Humboldt County to reform its code enforcement processes.
