Extremely Premature Baby With Congenital Defect Survives After Complex Surgery

A 730-gram baby born 12 weeks premature at 28 weeks gestation has successfully undergone complex surgery to correct a severe congenital defect. The infant, born with oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula, had his food pipe abnormally connected to his windpipe. The high-risk surgery was performed just a day after his birth. Following the procedure, the baby remained on ventilation for 25 days and non-invasive support for another 35 days. After 126 days in the NICU, the baby has recovered and was discharged weighing 1.54 kg.
