Election Commissioners' Conduct Complaint Ignored By Govt, RTI Reveals

Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised concerns about Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Maneesh Garg's conduct and internal work allocation changes. They wrote separately to Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan on July 29, alleging Garg revised responsibilities without consulting the Commission. However, the Cabinet Secretariat decided against taking action, deeming the complaints made in individual capacities. Documents released under RTI show the Cabinet Secretariat acknowledged the letters on August 5 and forwarded them to relevant departments. The Election Commissioners were appointed in March 2024.

चुनाव आयुक्त सुखबीर सिंह संधू और विवेक जोशी ने वरिष्ठ उप चुनाव आयुक्त मनीष गर्ग के आचरण और आंतरिक कार्य आवंटन में बदलाव को लेकर चिंता जताई थी। उन्होंने 29 जुलाई को कैबिनेट सचिव टी वी सोमनाथन को अलग-अलग पत्र लिखकर आरोप लगाया था कि गर्ग ने आयोग से सलाह लिए बिना जिम्मेदारियों को संशोधित किया है। हालांकि, कैबिनेट सचिवालय ने व्यक्तिगत क्षमता में की गई शिकायतों को देखते हुए कार्रवाई न करने का फैसला किया। RTI के तहत जारी दस्तावेजों से पता चलता है कि कैबिनेट सचिवालय ने 5 अगस्त को पत्रों को स्वीकार किया और संबंधित विभागों को भेज दिया। चुनाव आयुक्तों की नियुक्ति मार्च 2024 में हुई थी।
