Supreme Court Questions Large MRP-PTR Gap in Drug Prices, Seeks 16% Cap

The Supreme Court has taken a strong stance against the significant difference between the MRP and the price retailers receive (PTR) for medicines. During a hearing, the court questioned why the MRP should exceed the retail price by more than 16 percent. It suggested a cap of 16 percent margin on all drugs, including life-saving ones. The court cited an example of a cancer drug with a retail price of approximately ₹2,700 but an MRP of ₹27,000, highlighting the vast disparity.
