US AI Data Centers Turn to Airplane 'Graveyards' for Power
Times of India · technology
American AI data center companies are increasingly turning to retired airplane engines in desert 'graveyards' to power their energy-hungry infrastructure. Engineering firms are converting jet engines into stationary generators, with data center operators rapidly acquiring them due to a demand for "speed to power." This trend is partly driven by political pressure to reduce reliance on local grids. While these repurposed turbines offer a significant energy reserve, they are less fuel-efficient and produce higher air pollution than purpose-built generators. Elon Musk's xAI is already using eight such converted turbines.
