India's Rural Employment Guarantee Weakened By New Act
The Hindu - Business · business
India's rural right-to-work framework has been significantly weakened following the replacement of the MGNREGA with the VB-GRAM G Act in December 2025. The new law, implemented from July 1, has led to a substantial decrease in employment, with a 68% drop observed in July and August compared to the previous five-year average. This decline is attributed to the dismantling of MGNREGA's demand-driven system and the increased fiscal burden placed on states by the VB-GRAM G Act.
