Labrador Sgiath Wins 2026 Animal of the Year Award For Detecting Invasive Sea Squirt

Sgiath, a six-year-old black Labrador from the Scottish Highlands, has been awarded the 2026 Animal of the Year Award by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Originally trained as a mountain rescue dog, Sgiath now uses her sense of smell to detect an invasive marine organism known as 'sea vomit' or carpet sea squirt. She is believed to be the first dog globally trained for this specific detection task.
