Oscar-Bound Gondhal Performer Carries Forward Ancient Folk Ritual

Times of India · interesting

Bhaskar Kate, a 27-year-old from Mumbai, represents the 13th generation of his family to practice Gondhal, a centuries-old Maharashtrian devotional dance-drama ritual. He describes learning the art form as natural, akin to a fish learning to swim, passed down through generations by watching his father perform. His grandfather moved from near Shirdi to Mumbai to sustain the family's traditional livelihood through Gondhal performances. Kate now performs all aspects of the ritual, including singing, dancing, storytelling, and playing instruments, keeping the ancient tradition alive.
