Protest Intensifies Against River Water Extraction Project

Residents in Keralam's Kasaragod district are protesting a large-scale water extraction project from the Tejaswini river. The Kerala Water Authority project aims to supply water to seven local bodies in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Protesters fear the river lacks sufficient flow, especially during summer, to sustain the proposed extraction of around 20 million litres daily, potentially worsening water scarcity. They demand a scientific study to assess the river's capacity before proceeding, citing cumulative impacts from other water drawals.

केरल के कासरगोड जिले के लोग तेजस्विनी नदी से पानी निकालने के बड़े प्रोजेक्ट का विरोध कर रहे हैं। केरल जल प्राधिकरण का यह प्रोजेक्ट कन्नूर और कासरगोड जिलों की सात स्थानीय संस्थाओं को पानी पहुंचाएगा। प्रदर्शनकारियों को डर है कि गर्मी के मौसम में नदी में इतना पानी नहीं है कि रोज़ाना करीब 20 मिलियन लीटर निकाला जा सके, जिससे पानी की कमी और बढ़ सकती है। वे चाहते हैं कि प्रोजेक्ट शुरू करने से पहले नदी की क्षमता का वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन किया जाए, क्योंकि पहले से ही पानी निकालने के कई और प्रोजेक्ट चल रहे हैं।
