Scientists Develop World's First Working Nuclear Clocks

The Hindu - Science · science

Scientists have reported the world's first functional nuclear clocks, offering a potential leap in timekeeping precision beyond current atomic clocks. Unlike atomic clocks that rely on electron transitions, nuclear clocks utilize the nucleus of thorium-229, which has a low enough transition energy to be triggered by an ultraviolet laser. Researchers embedded the isotope in calcium fluoride crystals, creating a feedback loop to stabilize the laser against the nuclei.
