Egyptian-American surgeon Adam Hamawy, a US Army veteran, has won a seat in the US Congress, becoming New Jersey's first Muslim congressman. His path to politics was significantly influenced by medical missions to Gaza in 2024 and 2025, experiences he described as life-altering. Hamawy campaigned on a platform of "healthcare not bombs," aiming to challenge systems that fund conflict while burdening citizens with medical debt. Despite facing what he termed "anti-Muslim" attacks, his victory was celebrated by groups like the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
