Gurgaon Water Demand to Rise 52% by 2031; Tubewells Meet Supply Gap

Times of India · environment

Gurgaon's water demand is projected to increase by 52% to 1,170 million litres per day by 2031, up from the current 770 MLD. The city already faces a 100 MLD deficit between demand and treatment capacity, with tubewells currently bridging this gap. Groundwater levels have dropped significantly, with extraction rates at 212.77% of the replenishable resource. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed authorities to examine the groundwater situation and explore reducing extraction where GMDA water is available, considering the rapid urbanisation and loss of water bodies.
