IITs in 80s: Caste Based on Rank, Branch

IIT Madras alumnus Ramesh Srivats shared memories of the 1980s, stating that IITs were caste-conscious but one's 'caste' changed annually. Initially, JEE rank determined this hierarchy, but it soon shifted to academic branch and then GPA. Students with high GPAs achieved with less effort were considered 'geniuses', while those who worked hard were 'cash cows'. This system differed from birth-based caste, focusing instead on performance and academic achievement within the institution.

आईआईटी मद्रास के पूर्व छात्र रमेश श्रीवत्स ने 1980 के दशक की यादें साझा कीं। उन्होंने बताया कि उस समय आईआईटी में जाति का भेद था, लेकिन यह हर साल बदल जाता था। पहले जेईई रैंक से, फिर ब्रांच और बाद में जीपीए से यह तय होता था। कम मेहनत में अच्छे जीपीए वाले 'जीनियस' कहलाते थे, और कड़ी मेहनत करने वाले 'कैश काऊ'। यह जन्म आधारित जाति से अलग था, जो संस्थान के प्रदर्शन पर आधारित था।
