Uttar Pradesh has introduced a single-shot iron injection, Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM), to combat anaemia among pregnant women and reduce maternal deaths. This initiative follows a successful pilot in five districts, targeting women who struggle with regular IFA tablet intake due to side effects or adherence issues. The injection offers greater compliance and quicker haemoglobin improvement, potentially reducing hospital visits compared to traditional treatments. Anaemia is a significant factor in maternal mortality, contributing to an estimated 40% to 50% of deaths nationally.
