Gulf of Mexico Marine Life Declined Dramatically After BP Oil Spill
Hindustan Times · environment
Marine animal populations in the Gulf of Mexico plummeted by approximately 60% in the years following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a new study published in PNAS has found. Fish populations dropped by 63.5%, crustaceans by 62%, and squid and octopuses by 59.7%. Researchers focused on the ocean's "twilight zone" and discovered that these populations have not recovered. The study suggests the oil spill is the most likely cause for the decline, as other natural variables did not correlate with the observed changes.
