Birenkumar Rameshbhai Patel, an Indian-origin man in Columbia, South Carolina, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to illegally obtain a U visa for a store clerk by staging a robbery. Patel and the clerk faked the incident on March 9, 2025, to make it appear the clerk was a victim of a felonious assault. The U visa offers a path to US citizenship for victims of crimes who assist law enforcement. The clerk has since been deported to India. Patel faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
