Maharashtra will begin issuing Women Farmers Certificates (WFCs) on October 2 under the Women Farmer’s Empowerment Act 2026. This landmark legislation formally recognises women engaged in agriculture or allied activities as farmers, even if they do not own the land they cultivate. The WFC aims to empower lakhs of women who are integral to agri-food systems, livestock, poultry, and fisheries but often excluded from formal definitions. This move by Maharashtra demonstrates significant political will to address the feminisation of agriculture and highlight the crucial role of women in the sector.
