Critically Endangered Chinese Bahaba Detected in Hong Kong Waters After Decade

Hindustan Times · science

Researchers have detected the critically endangered Chinese bahaba in Hong Kong waters for the first time in over a decade, using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. The fish itself was not caught, but traces were found in seawater samples collected between January and September 2025 across 23 sites. This marks the first scientific discovery of the species in the city since the early 2000s. The eDNA method offers a less invasive way to track rare species compared to traditional capture methods, potentially aiding conservation efforts.
