Assam Uses GPS Collars on 5 Elephants To Prevent Human-Wildlife Conflict

The Better India · lifestyle

Assam's Forest Department and WWF-India are using GPS collars on five elephants to understand and mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Researchers fitted collars on four female elephants and one male, collecting over 38,000 location points between April 2021 and June 2026. The data reveals specific migration patterns, particularly elephants moving towards farmlands and tea gardens during harvest season between October and January. This information helps authorities anticipate elephant movements and implement measures to keep both animals and people safe. The findings were published in a report titled 'Tracking the Giants'.
