The Odisha government has approached the Supreme Court challenging Andhra Pradesh's decision to hold panchayat elections in the Kotia region's disputed villages. Both states claim jurisdiction over the 21 villages along their inter-state border. The Supreme Court had previously ordered a status quo in 2006. Tensions resurfaced in 2021 when Andhra Pradesh conducted polls, leading Odisha to file a contempt petition in 2022. Most recently, Andhra Pradesh notified elections for zilla parishad and panchayat samiti in three specific villages.
