Kochi Water Pipelines Deteriorate, Restricting Flow Due to Sediment Buildup

Studies by French firm SUEZ reveal significant deterioration in Kochi's water pipelines, particularly in Kaloor and Karuvelipady divisions. Substantial sediment deposits inside the pipes are restricting water flow, while pipelines beneath backwaters are identified as contamination sources needing replacement. The firm, managing water distribution under a project funded by the Asian Development Bank, noted the poor condition of asbestos and cast iron pipes, alongside leakages in PVC pipes. A consumer survey in over 2.2 lakh houses is nearing completion, with network design expected soon.

फ्रांसीसी फर्म SUEZ की स्टडी से पता चला है कि कोच्चि की पानी की पाइपलाइनें, खासकर कालूور और करुवेलिपाडी डिवीजनों में, काफी खराब हो गई हैं। पाइपों के अंदर तलछट की भारी मात्रा जमने से पानी का बहाव रुक रहा है, जबकि बैकवाटर के नीचे की पाइपलाइनों को प्रदूषण का स्रोत बताया गया है जिन्हें बदलने की ज़रूरत है। एशियाई विकास बैंक (Asian Development Bank) द्वारा फंड किए गए एक प्रोजेक्ट के तहत पानी के वितरण का प्रबंधन करने वाली फर्म ने एस्बेस्टस और कास्ट आयरन पाइपों की खराब हालत के साथ-साथ PVC पाइपों में लीकेज का भी ज़िक्र किया।
