Multistorey Building Collapses in Kenya's Nairobi; Many Feared Trapped

A multistorey building under construction collapsed in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday, with many people feared trapped in the rubble. The building, which had more than ten upper floors under construction, came down around 1 PM local time in the busy Eastleigh commercial area. Rescuers are digging through the debris, but heavy equipment was slow to arrive. Authorities stated the building had construction approval but lacked an occupation certificate, making ground-floor shops illegal. Investigations are underway to determine negligence, as a significant percentage of buildings nationwide reportedly fail to meet standards.

केन्या की राजधानी नैरोबी में शुक्रवार को एक निर्माणाधीन बहुमंजिला इमारत ढह गई। इस हादसे में कई लोगों के मलबे में फंसे होने की आशंका है। यह इमारत, जिसके दस से ज़्यादा ऊपरी मंज़िलें बन रही थीं, दोपहर करीब 1 बजे नैरोबी के व्यस्त ईस्टलेघ कमर्शियल इलाके में गिरी। बचावकर्मी मलबे को हटाने का काम कर रहे हैं, लेकिन भारी मशीनरी को घटनास्थल पर पहुंचने में देरी हुई। अधिकारियों ने बताया कि इमारत को निर्माण की मंज़ूरी मिली हुई थी, लेकिन उसमें रहने का प्रमाण पत्र (occupation certificate) नहीं था, जिस कारण भू-तल की दुकानें अवैध थीं।
