A special court in Thiruvananthapuram has sentenced a priest, Rajesh, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹50,000 for raping a woman. The priest committed the crime on the pretext of performing rituals to rid her husband of an alleged evil spirit. The incident occurred in April 2016 when the accused lured the woman into a storeroom of a religious institution. The assault allegedly continued for several days before the woman filed a complaint.
