India's Consumer Stocks Face Rs 4 Lakh Crore
Economic Times Markets · stocks
India's consumer stocks, typically known for stability, have become significant market laggards this year, resulting in a loss of nearly Rs 4 lakh crore in investor wealth. Major FMCG and consumer companies have seen their market capitalization drop substantially, with ITC and Godrej Consumer Products experiencing significant declines. This downturn occurred despite indications of improving demand and resilient rural and urban consumption. The weakness is attributed to valuation de-rating and persistent foreign selling, compounded by elevated input costs for some companies.
