Gold & Silver Limits: What Tax Authorities Consider Legally Held At Home

Times of India · business

There is no upper legal limit on gold or silver holdings, but tax authorities assess if assets were acquired lawfully. In a recent case, the ITAT Mumbai provided relief to a woman whose assets were seized, stating that CBDT Instruction No. 1916's limits (500g for married women, 250g for unmarried, 100g for men) are practical benchmarks, not absolute exemptions. The tribunal emphasized that pure gold should not be treated as unexplained simply due to its form, and lack of old bills isn't conclusive proof against long-held assets.
