A rare 13th-century Chola-era inscription detailing the construction of a sluice has been discovered during the desilting of Medavakkam tank in Chennai. Experts deciphered the inscription, which states that a merchant built the sluice in 1268 CE for irrigation during the reign of Telugu Chola king Sri Vijaya Kanda Gopalan. This finding provides evidence of an ancient water management system and highlights that the region historically had numerous lakes for drinking water and irrigation. The inscription underscores the importance of preserving such historically significant lakes.
