Strong winds and rain battered Aruvappulam panchayat in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, on Monday and Tuesday evenings, uprooting or snapping thousands of banana plants. Many of these plants were ready for harvest, and five farmers alone lost 1,990 plants between them. Some farmers had invested heavily, leasing land and taking bank loans, and now estimate their combined losses in lakhs of rupees. Residents and farmers are urging the state government to provide eligible compensation to those who have lost their entire investment.
