Volcanic Lightning Peaks 1.1 Hours After Eruptions, Study Finds
Times of India · science
Scientists analyzing 16 major volcanic eruptions between 2010 and 2024 discovered that lightning activity typically peaked 0.5 to 2 hours after the initial flash, with an average delay of 1.1 hours. This delayed electrification is linked to plume expansion and charge build-up. The study, published in Earth and Planetary Physics, also found that eruptions with wider ash dispersal areas sustained longer-lasting electrical activity. Researchers focused on events with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 4 or higher, using data from the World-Wide Lightning Location Network and the Global Precipitation Measurement mission.
