NHAI New Alignment Saves 1,900 Trees on Zirakpur Bypass Project

Hindustan Times · environment

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed a new alignment for the 19 km Zirakpur-Panchkula bypass project, aiming to save approximately 1,900 trees. This revised plan will shift the road towards the Ghaggar side, reducing the number of trees to be felled by nearly 50% from the initial proposal. The change, however, will increase project costs by ₹65 crore and extend its completion timeline. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the NHAI to re-survey the bypass due to environmental concerns raised in a public interest litigation.
