A new study reveals gender bias has extended to artificial intelligence, with female-presenting AI assistants being paid 10.25% less than male counterparts for identical tasks. Researchers conducted an experiment in a virtual reality office where 189 employees compensated AI assistants for completing workplace tasks. Participants perceived the male-presenting AI as more human-like and rewarded it more generously, even when capabilities were identical. The findings suggest that human gender stereotypes can influence interactions with machines, potentially reinforcing existing social inequalities as AI becomes more prevalent in workplaces.
