New Multi-Principal Element Alloy Developed For Safer Medical Implants
The Hindu · india
Researchers from the University of Hyderabad, in collaboration with IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bhubaneswar, and CSIR-CECRI, have developed a novel multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) for medical implants. This new alloy, a blend of titanium, cobalt, and chromium in equal proportions, demonstrates high strength, excellent wear and corrosion resistance, and improved flexibility. Laboratory tests confirmed its biocompatibility and healthy cell growth without toxic effects. This development could address limitations of conventional implant metals, potentially reducing implant loosening and the need for repeat surgeries.
