Harriers Act as 'Grassland Gardeners' by Spreading Seeds Through Their Diet

Mongabay India · environment

Harriers, birds of prey that migrate to India annually, have been discovered to play a surprising role in grassland ecosystems. A recent study revealed that two species, pallid and Montagu's harriers, consume seeds within their prey's digestive systems. These seeds are then expelled unharmed, effectively dispersing them across the grasslands. This unique behaviour contributes to plant diversity and ecosystem health. While most harrier species are of least concern, the pallid harrier is near threatened globally. In India, all harriers are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
