Hanford Landfill Expands, Adding 2.8 Million Cubic Yards for Radioactive Waste Disposal
Times of India · environment
The Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF) at Washington state's Hanford Site has expanded its capacity, adding 2.8 million cubic yards for hazardous waste disposal. Since 1996, the landfill has received 20 million tons of low-level radioactive and hazardous waste from cleanup operations. This latest expansion, known as Super Cell 11, is approximately 80 feet deep and covers a significant area. The ERDF plays a crucial role in the US Department of Energy's extensive environmental cleanup program at the Hanford Site, managing solid waste from demolished facilities and contaminated sites.
